Cana — Something Old, Something New

At your wedding…
Serve the wine that was served at the
Wedding at Cana of Galilee
As told in John 2: 1-3, 10
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine…”
The master of the banquet ... called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best ‘til now.”
What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
Recent research by Eliyashiv Drori, an Ariel University oenologist working in the foothills of Jerusalem, has identified and recreated ancient wines. Various methods were used, including the comparisons of the DNA of various known ancient grape varieties and the pioneering use of a three-dimensional scanner, to analyze burned and dried seeds found in archaeological digs.
The work has yielded the results that his team was looking for. Among the recreated wine grapes are two varietals, a red and a white, that are believed to be the ones that were served as a result of Jesus’s first miracle – at the Wedding at Cana.
Now, Cana Wines makes these fine and historic wines available to you, to be served at your own wedding!
Marawi (also called hamdani) is a light and mostly dry white wine.
Dabouki, the older grape, the varietal that Mr. Drori says is “a good candidate for what filled the glass of Jesus” (whom he believes drank white as well as red) is a robust red, suitable for hearty meals.
